GIRLGUIDING GLOUCESTERSHIRE  IN ACTION

85 YEARS OF GUIDING IN CINDERFORD

Thinking Day-134-2.jpg (43000 bytes)

A celebratory service for 85 years of Girlguiding in Cinderford, held in Cinderford Methodist Church was the culmination of many weeks of planning by Mrs Ruth Jordan, Mrs Karen Jenkins, Mrs Janet Bennett and Mrs Denise Davies.

A  lively, meaningful service with the full participation of the current Guides, Brownies and Rainbows was led by the County Guide Chaplain, Rev Marilyn Sharland.  Mr Robin Healey was organist and the lesson was read by Miss Sheila Llewellyn.  A retiring collection, together with the units’ contributions, was for the Guide Thinking Day Fund.

The Church was full of parents, friends and ex-Guides and Brownies from many parts of the country.

Following the service, tea and cake was served in the Wesley Hall where a display of memorabilia from as far back as 1927 was arranged.  Many photographs were taken, memories recorded and friendships renewed.  A very successful event and it is good to see the present units flourishing and carrying on the proud tradition.

Disneyland Trip

13 girls and 4 leaders from 1st and 2nd Kingswood and 1st Wotton Brownies travelled to France back in January and had a wonderful time! We met a few characters and tried lots of exciting rides, the girls even managed to persuade to of the leaders to try the ride that did several 360 degree rotations....if I had known they were part of the ride I am not sure I would have gone for it!

KNITTED JERKINS UPDATE FROM SW ENGLAND REGION

The response to our appeal for knitted Jerkins has been amazing. Our aim was to be able to provide some comfort and warmth to street children in India, and thanks to your help we have greatly exceeded our target. We have been so overwhelmed by the response to our appeal, that we have had to ask for some help in distributing the Jerkins and have enlisted the help of the Trussell Trust, who are working with impoverished young people and their families in Bulgaria, to improve living conditions, and break the cycle of poverty that is gripping many families who live there.

We would like to say a big thank you to those of you who gave up your time to knit the beautiful, and many coloured Jerkins. Whether your Jerkin goes to India or Bulgaria I know that the child who receives it will be grateful of your kindness and its warmth.

Tewkesbury Food Festival - Guide Cooking Competition.

Rainbows, Brownies and Guides took part in the 2010 Tewkesbury Food Festival - including Georgia, the Brownie above. She had the chance to cook on stage with James Martin. Helped by Guider Alison, they created some of the contents of her winning entry in the yummy healthy lunchbox competition sponsored by The Count Me In Project.

Guides from across Gloucestershire competed in an Outdoor Cooking Competition at the Tewkesbury Food Festival, which was judged by local chefs and food experts. Each patrol created 3 courses from their chosen country: The Philippines, Sardinia, Scotland and Indonisia. (Pictures here)

Highbury Guides celebrate their 90th birthday and Battledown Rainbows celebrate 10yrs. (Pictures here)

Members past and present, together with friends and families gathered at Highbury Church Hall in Cheltenham to celebrate the Guide Unit's 90th birthday. Displays of old log books and uniforms allowed the older visitors to reminisce while the younger members entertaiined their visitors with a display of dances across the decades. The evening began with the planting of a tree and entered with a birthady cake and candles.

In the same District,Prestbury Rainbows recently celebrated their 10th birthday and they had great fun icing cakes and playing games before cutting their own birthday cake.

Another successful Big Sleepover  We had a fantastic time at our sleepover this year (We think it is our Best one so far!!)

The girls from St Nicolas and St Peter's Brownie packs joined together for the Giant Sleepover. Our theme this year had been kept a secret until they turned up on the night .....CHRISTMAS!!!!

They all entered the fun of the theme and made some christmas cards, snowmen, santa's, crowns, boxes and stockings. Our pack "granny" (who was 86 on the night)  had knitted 50 father christmas's to go in their stockings and they all went home with a Christmas sack full of presents from the Giant sleepover.

Take a look at the website to see them all in action!!

Armenian Challenge  In November last year I was selected to represent the UK on a GOLD project to Armenia, Guiding Overseas Linked with Development for those who aren’t aware. The aim of the trip is to promote Guiding through activity days and to help existing and new leaders with activity ideas and programme planning. My team and I have organised a challenge badge to educate UK girls on the culture and ways of life, including Guiding, in Armenia. The Challenge Badge will be applicable to all Sections, and the badges will cost £1 each. See Activity Page for details

Watch this space for a report of the project.

COLESBOURNE PARK SNOWDROPS

Brownies, Guides and Guiders from around the county served tea and homemade cakes to hundres of visitors at the Colesbourne Park Snowdrop Weekend in March.

These three Brownies from the 3rd Stroud Pack are ready for action.

Thank you everyone all around the County who supplied cakes for this event. We must have had over 150  of every kind you could imagine. Please thank W.I. members who supported us.The Snowdrop Weekend was a great success and enjoyed by the Leaders, Trefoil Members Young Leaders, Guides, Brownies, Scouts and husbands. Over 50 people came to help including our County President, County Commissioner, Assistant County Commissioner and County Secretary. Pauline Merchant put together our publicity boards to great effect.Over the weekend we took £1500. Which I am sure you will agree is a good result. The weather being kind visitors had time to chat. A great many had been involved in Guiding in their lives, one couple had been to Sangam 3 times and one gentleman was very pleased to tell me he was an Ambassador.

Congratulations and great Guiding to you all.  Irene Catton.
